Colico is a tourist destination located at the northern end of Lake Como, where the lake meets the mountains of Valtellina and Valchiavenna. Piona Abbey is one of the most evocative places in the Colico area. Located on the peaceful Olgiasca peninsula, it overlooks the waters of Lake Como directly, offering a particularly scenic and quiet view.

The monastic complex, founded in the 12th century and now inhabited by Cistercian monks, is known for its perfectly preserved Romanesque cloister, decorated with elegant columns and carved capitals. In addition to its historical and spiritual value, the abbey is appreciated for the atmosphere of peace that surrounds it. Visitors can walk through the garden and the cloister, visit the church, and purchase products made by the monks, such as liqueurs and herbal teas.

Fort Fuentes is an imposing fortification built by the Spanish in 1603 to control access to Valtellina and the main Alpine trade routes. Located on a panoramic hill near Colico, the fort dominated the entrance to the valley and the northern part of Lake Como, representing for centuries an important strategic military outpost. Today, evocative ruins remain, allowing visitors to imagine the ancient defensive structure, with bastions, walls, and internal pathways.

The visit also offers splendid views over Pian di Spagna and the surrounding mountains, making the site interesting both from a historical and scenic point of view.

The Fort Montecchio Nord is one of the best-preserved military forts in Europe dating back to the First World War. Built between 1911 and 1914 to defend the northern Italian border, it overlooks the Colico plain and the entrance to Valtellina from above. The fort is known for its impressive rotating armored turrets, still perfectly functional, and for the long underground corridors that connected positions and storage areas.

Today it can be visited with guided tours that lead visitors to discover military life of the time and the defensive technologies used, also offering splendid views over Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

The beaches of Colico are among the widest and most popular on Lake Como. Located along the northern shore of the lake, they offer ideal spaces for relaxing, swimming, or enjoying water sports. Among the best known are Piona Beach and Ontano Beach, also highly appreciated by windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts thanks to the favorable winds.

The beaches are easy to reach and surrounded by a charming Alpine landscape, with green areas and walking paths that make the experience enjoyable for families, sports lovers, and nature enthusiasts.

The Pian di Spagna and Lake Mezzola Nature Reserve is a vast protected natural area located between Lake Como and Valchiavenna. Characterized by wetlands, reed beds, and wide meadows, it provides an ideal habitat for numerous bird species and is a highly appreciated destination for birdwatching and nature photography enthusiasts. The reserve offers several walking and cycling paths that allow visitors to explore the landscape at a მშვიდ pace, surrounded by nature and charming views.

The nearby Lake Mezzola, more secluded and wilder than Lake Como, helps make this area a perfect place for walks, excursions, and relaxing moments immersed in nature.

Monte Legnone is the highest mountain on the eastern shore of Lake Como, reaching 2,609 meters in altitude. Located above Colico, it dominates the panorama of the Upper Lake Como area and is a highly appreciated destination for hikers. Its trails cross woods, pastures, and alpine environments up to the summit, from which there are spectacular views of Lake Como, Valtellina, and the surrounding Alps. Monte Legnone is ideal for trekking and nature lovers, offering routes of varying difficulty and some of the most evocative scenery in the area.
